Sigma Beta Club
In 1950 Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity became the first Greek organization to develop a youth auxiliary group. Under the direction of Dr. Parlette Moore the Sigma Beta Club was founded. Brother Moore was concerned about our changing needs in our communities and recognized the most important role that Sigma men could play in the lives of our youths.
The Sigma Beta Clubs’ four major principles of focus are on Culture, Athletics, Social and Educational needs. The Sigma Beta Club offers a unique opportunity to develop values, leadership skills and social/cultural awareness in our youth during their developmental years. Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of its members, but at the same time provide them with a well-rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today’s society. Phi Beta Sigma is confident that investing in our youth today will produce effective leaders tomorrow.
On a local level, Iota Nu Sigma averages 30 young men per academic year. With a well-rounded curriculum, the young men have personal tutoring, participate in multiple service projects, conduct fundraisers and are active in the step team. The chapter hosts an awards recognition program culminating the end of each academic year and provides scholarships to qualified graduating seniors that have been accepted into institutions of higher learning.
The club motto is:
Next Generation of Leaders,
Accepting the Responsibility,
Loving the Challenge
The purposes for an organization such as the Sigma Beta Club are many. The Club, being an organization for young male students, gives them an opportunity to meet with each other on a regular basis outside the school atmosphere to discuss their interest and problems. The Club also gives its members a chance to meet with college and professional men on a regular basis; therefore, exposing the membership to various viewpoints of educational advancements. The club introduces its members to the national programs of the fraternity through the unified national program focus involving having professionals conduct workshop on financial literacy in Bigger & Better Business, Sigma Education Time Tutorial Program in Education, and raising funds for the March of Dimes in Social Action. The club will also participate in the other programs of the fraternity National Programs under Education, Bigger and Better Business, and Social Action. The enrichment programs are cultural, social, and athletic. They are designed to give members a chance to be innovative, thereby instilling self- confidence and a feeling of accomplishment.
