Social Action
During the 20th anniversary of Sigma, the Committee on Public Policy urged that the fraternity come forth with a broadly-based program that would be addressed to the problems of the great masses of the Negro people. This new departure, in large measure, grew out of the experiences of the New York group. These men from Manhattan brought with them a new idea, SOCIAL ACTION.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has from its very beginning concerned itself with improving the general well-being of minority groups. In 1934, a well-defined program of Social Action was formulated and put into action. Bro. Elmo M. Anderson, then president of Epsilon Sigma Chapter (New York) formulated this program calling for the reconstruction of social order. It was a tremendous success. It fit in with the social thinking of the American public in those New Deal years.
The Iota Nu Sigma Chapter has implemented the Social Action Program in various ways. Nationally we annually partner with the March of Dimes in their annual March for Babies fundraiser. This year team Iota Nu Sigma raised in excess of $9000 to prevent premature births. Through collaboration with the Glen Ellyn Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta we assisted in building two homes in the DuPage County area in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. Locally we partnered with Share Your Soles to raise $100,000 to assist in their vision of providing shoes to impoverished countries around the world. Two Saturdays of every month we serve breakfast at the Pacific Garden Mission for the homeless residents.
The commitment to service is reflected in the fraternity’s motto “Culture for Service, Service for Humanity.” The brothers of Iota Nu Sigma answer the call to serve our community.
